Review for The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past:
Graphics: 9/10
If you compare the graphics from LttP (Link to the Past) to nowadays'
systems, the graphics would look rather unattractive to some, but taking in
consideration only the games of its time, then LttP was without a doubt in
my mind one of the best out there in terms of graphical appealness. This
game, compared to other SNES games, is rather colourful and details are
rather well displayed. You can clearly make the distinction of small detail
like Link's belt, his pointy ears, and the sort. I give it a 9/10 only for
the fact that, as much as like love the graphics in this game, there's a few
other games that surpass it.
Sounds/Music: 10/10
I am still pretty impressed with the music in this game. Most, if not all,
of the tunes featured in this game gets stuck in my head all of a sudden,
taking me back through memory lane and playing through a certain dungeon or
exploring the world of Hyrule. None of the music in this game is annoying at
all, sometimes in games I prefer to have the music off because I find it
annoying, but this game has none of that. Not only is the music great, the
sounds are very well made in this game: from an arrow getting stuck in a
wall sound to the "thwink" sounds that happen when you block with your
shield. This game msuic and sounds really stood out in its day, making me
give this a 10/10.
Controls: 9/10
The controls for this game are quite simple to comprehend, nothing is really
hard to do. You can move Link around the area with the directional pad, in 8
different directions: north, north-east, east, south-east, south,
south-west, west and north-west. There isn't some combinations to pull off
in the game to strike down foes, everything is one button away. All-in-all,
once you know what button does what, they it's easy going form there.. 9/10.
Gameplay: 10/10
Stunning, simply stunning. The gameplay is the main reasons why I love video
games and this game's storyline, is simplistic as it sounds, is great! I
will not delve into the storyline though, though that's what drives this
game forward. With the addition of many side-quests and optional items to
obtain, this makes the gameplay more than just a f"ollow the story until the
end" game. Even though this game lacks a 2-player mode, it still deserves
the full 10/10 in my opinion.
Difficulty: 7.5/10
Of course, what would a game be without some sort of difficulty to it, a
boring one. This game had a decent difficulty level, pretty much depending
on where in the game you are at, some dungeons will proves to be hard, while
others feel like a walk in the park (well, not really a walk in the park,
but you get the idea..). Some places will require some patience to get
through, others will require some thought process, but all in all, it's not
all the bad. Some bosses though, are pretty much a pain if you're not
prepared for them, or just some that are plain annoying to kill. In the end,
you should get through the game with some amount of difficulty, but nothing
over-bearing.. 7.5/10.
Frustration: 4/10
Pretty low frustration level in this game, nothing should really prove to
get under your skin and irritate you to the point of stopping to play. Of
course, what are the chances that you'll land on a game that doesn't have
its share of frustration level. Most places are pretty simple to get through
if you keep a cool head. Though there are a few bosses that might be pretty
annoying, like the boss up on death mountain in the light world, if it
pushes you down, you have to start it over. After 2-5 times, you're probably
not going to like it. Though only a few place may prove to yield that, so
4/10 seems appropriate.
Replay Value: 8/10
Yes, this game is amazingly good. Yes, the music is really great. Yes, the
storyline really adds to the game. Though sadly, once you're done in this
game and have gotten everything there is to get, there's nothing more to do
apart start a new game again. The replay value does get itself an 8/10
though, only for the fact that's pretty pretty fun to power up the old SNES
from time to time and play through the game.
Overall: 9.5/10
This is one of my highly rated games in my book, this game simply has given
me so much joy in my childhood years when I played through it, and sometimes
makes me come back for more, even though I know the dungeon's inside-out
now. Not many games I'll ever review will get a 9.5, so if you have not
played this game and have a sudden urge to power up the old SNES someday,
take this game in consideration.
